I did it! I got out of the house, in the morning, while it was snowing and 29 degrees F and did my first 4 mile training run. I was dressed just right: I had my turtle fur collar, my silly green hat, light fleece gloves, 3 thin shirt/jacket layers, 2 pant layers, Vasque trail shoes, and OR gators.
If you haven't checked out MapMyRun.com yet, you might want to: it's a great place to log your training. It will help you track the mileage on your shoes, and it's free!
You're probably going to think I'm crazy, but it was GORGEOUS outside at the metro park. It was gray and chilly. There was fluffy snow everywhere! I saw a guy walking his Shelly Shepherd and two women cross country skiing (classic style). I was passed by another runner on the bike path.
My thoughts were ping ponging all over: content for this blog, choices for the future, how everyone's training is going. I even came up with a cool business idea. Mostly I had a really happy run and was very glad to be there running with my fuzzy dog.
I hope everyone had a happy run today!
Please take a moment to let everyone know how your training went today in the comment section below.

i'm doing high cardio every third day. it's my chance to watch cable tv and mentally zone out (in that order).
ReplyDeletei go to the New Y downtown and it's been fabulous. they are totally replacing all equipment even though they've only been open four years - virtual reality screens for the stationery bike riders, personal tv and computers on the elipticals, etc. i know so many friends and co-workers there, that it's comfortable even if i don't socialize AT ALL just to get my "job" done.
so yesterday i get over there and it is so crowded that i can't do either my elliptical or the light chest muscle lifts i've been asked to do by my pulmonologist. ok, back to the dreaded rowing machine. i did a fresh 15 minutes of rowing, then my normal 60 minutes as the post-Christmas guilt crowd thinned out. (well, hopefully they "thinned" out:-)
so. i thought about a catchy name like Kamboja (which always sounds Kwanzaa-ish - principled - to me). i was called "Jammer" or "the JammerGirl" when i was an 12 year old forcing my way into the teenagers pickup hoops game in the neighborhood. while i'm still a Bull in the China shop when it comes to athletics, i'm thinking a moniker that reflects my philosophical refinement. ... still working !
Well, the first 2 actual run days have shown me a couple things. First, I was in far worse shape than I thought I was and, second, I don't think I'm going to be able to run this particular marathon in May. My fitness level just isn't there. I'm looking at 10-15 minute miles and I'm sucking wind the whole way. Only the second run and I'm already going on a sore knee (I'm hoping a good pair of shoes will clear that up).
ReplyDeleteI am still going to keep running. I am still going to keep improving. And I'm for damn sure going to get this weight off (as in fat, I'm not so concerned about the number of pounds) now that I realize how much it's slowing me down.
If you don't mind, I still would like to keep communicating through this site and I'd also like to go to the event to cheer those running on. And who knows, maybe my bod will kick into overdrive on week 2 and I'll be printing a retraction. I'm just not seeing it right now.
